Aedes
Aedes è un genere di zanzare originariamente localizzate in zone tropicali e subtropicali, ma ora presenti in tutti i continenti esclusi l'Antartide. Alcune specie sono state diffuse dall'attività umana. Aedes albopictus, specie più invasiva, è stata recentemente diffusa nel Nuovo Mondo, compresi gli Stati Uniti, dal commercio degli pneumatici usati. Prima descritta e nominata da Meigen nel 1818, il nome generico deriva dal greco antico ἀηδής, aēdēs, che significa "sgradevole" o "odioso". Alcune specie di questo genere trasmettono gravi malattie, tra cui la febbre dengue e la febbre gialla. In Polinesia, la specie Aedes polynesiensis è responsabile della trasmissione della filariasi linfatica umana. Aedes può essere rilevato e monitorato da ovitraps.
