Amharic (/ æmhærɪk / o / ɑːmhɑrɪk /; Amharic: አማርኛ, Amarəñña, IPA: (ascolta)) è una lingua semitica parlata in Etiopia. È la seconda lingua più semitica del mondo, dopo l'arabo, e la lingua ufficiale della Repubblica Democratica Federale di Etiopia. Pertanto, ha lo stato ufficiale e viene utilizzato a livello nazionale. Amharic è anche la lingua ufficiale o di lavoro di diversi stati all'interno del sistema federale. È stato il linguaggio di lavoro del governo, dell'esercito e della Chiesa ortodossa etiopica di Tewahedo in tempi medievali e moderni. Al di fuori dell'Etiopia, Amharic è la lingua di circa 2,7 milioni di emigranti. È scritto (da sinistra a destra) usando Amharic Fidel, ፊደል, che è cresciuto dal linguaggio Ge'ez abugida, nelle lingue etiopiche semitiche, ፊደል fidel ("alfabeto", "lettera" o "carattere") e አቡጊዳ abugida (dalle prime quattro lettere etiopiche, che hanno dato origine al termine linguistico abugida). Non esiste un modo concreto di traslitterare Amarico in caratteri romani.
