Arcaismo
Nella lingua, un arcaismo è l'uso di una forma di discorso o di scrittura che non è più corrente o che è attiva solo in alcuni contesti speciali. Il loro uso deliberato può essere suddiviso in arcaismi letterari, che cercano di evocare lo stile di vecchi discorsi e di scrittura; E gli arcaismi lessicali, l'uso di parole non più in uso comune. Una distinzione tra parole arcaiche e obsolete e sensi di parole è ampiamente utilizzata dai dizionari. Una parola o un senso arcaico è uno che ha ancora un uso corrente, ma il cui uso è diminuito a pochi contesti specializzati, al di fuori del quale connota linguaggio antico. Un buon esempio di senso arcaico è l'attuale forma subjunctive: non è obsoleta: viene utilizzata in costruzioni come se si tratti di X o Y e sia come può, ma è poco utilizzata al di fuori di tali contesti specifici e Alcuni altri, e il loro uso al di fuori di loro sembra vecchio stile. Al contrario, una parola o un senso obsoleto è quella che non è più utilizzata. Un lettore li incontra durante la lettura di testi secolari.
