Ciò ha portato ad un parlamento sospeso in cui nessun partito era in grado di comandare una maggioranza nella Camera dei Comuni. Questa è stata solo la seconda elezione generale dopo la seconda guerra mondiale per restituire un parlamento sospeso, la prima è l'elezione del febbraio 1974.
