Nei sistemi informatici ed elettronici, il codice decimale binario è una classe di codici binari di numeri decimali in cui ogni cifra decimale è rappresentata da un numero fisso di bit, di solito quattro o otto, anche se altre dimensioni sono state utilizzate storicamente. I modelli a bit speciali vengono usati talvolta per un segno o per altre indicazioni. Nei sistemi a byte orientati, il termine BCD non compresso di solito implica un byte completo per ogni cifra, mentre il BCD imballato codifica tipicamente due cifre decimali in un solo byte, approfittando del fatto che quattro bit sono sufficienti per rappresentare l'intervallo da 0 a 9. La precisa codifica a 4 bit può tuttavia variare, per motivi tecnici, per esempio vedere Excess-3. La principale virtù del BCD è la rappresentazione più accurata e l'arrotondamento delle grandezze decimali, nonché una facilità di conversione in rappresentazioni leggibili dall'uomo, rispetto ai sistemi binari posizionali. Gli inconvenienti principali di BCD sono un piccolo aumento della complessità dei circuiti necessari per l'implementazione delle aritmetiche di base e di un deposito leggermente meno densa. BCD è stato utilizzato in molti computer decimali primi.
