Il byte / baɪt / è un'unità di informazioni digitali in informatica e telecomunicazioni che più comunemente consiste in otto bit. Storicamente, il byte era il numero di bit usati per codificare un singolo carattere di testo in un computer e per questo è la più piccola unità di indirizzabile di memoria in molte architetture di computer. La dimensione del byte è stata storicamente dipendente dall'hardware e non esistevano standard definitive che imponevano la dimensione. Lo standard de facto di otto bit è un potere conveniente di due che permettono i valori da 0 a 255 per un byte. Lo standard internazionale IEC 80000-13 ha codificato questo significato comune. Molti tipi di applicazioni utilizzano informazioni rappresentabili in otto o meno bit e processori di progettazione ottimizzano per questo uso comune. La popolarità delle principali architetture di calcolo commerciale ha aiutato l'accettazione ubiquitaria della dimensione a 8 bit.
