Una catecolamina è una monoammina, un composto organico che ha un catecholo e una amina a catena laterale. Il catecholo è una sostanza chimica, ma può anche essere usato come nome di un sostituente, in cui rappresenta un gruppo di 1,2-diidrossibenzene. Le catecolamine sono derivate dalla tirosina dell'aminoacido. Le catecolamine sono solubili in acqua e sono 50% legate alle proteine plasmatiche quando circolano nel flusso sanguigno. Nel corpo umano, le catecolamine più abbondanti sono l'epinefrina, la norepinefrina e la dopamina, tutte prodotte da fenilalanina e tirosina. La liberazione degli ormoni, l'epinefrina e la norepinefrina dalla midollula surrenale delle ghiandole surrenali, sono parte della risposta di combattimento o di volo. La tirosina viene creata dalla fenilalanina mediante idrossilazione dall'enzima fenilalanina idrossilasi. La tirosina viene anche ingerita direttamente dalle proteine dietetiche. Le cellule secernenti di catecolamina utilizzano diverse reazioni per convertire la tirosina in sequenza a L-DOPA e successivamente alla dopamina. A seconda del tipo di cellula, la dopamina può essere ulteriormente convertita in norepinefrina o addirittura convertita in epinefrina. Diversi farmaci stimolanti sono analoghi della catecolina.
