I poli celestiali del nord e del sud appaiono permanentemente direttamente sopra un osservatore al Polo Nord e al Polo Sud. I pali celesti non rimangono permanentemente fissati sullo sfondo delle stelle. A causa di un fenomeno noto come la precessione degli equinozi, i poli esercitano circoli sulla sfera celeste, con un periodo di circa 25.700 anni.
