La cefalizzazione è considerata una tendenza evolutiva, per cui il tessuto nervoso, in molte generazioni, si concentra verso un'estremità di un organismo. Questo processo produce eventualmente una regione di testa con organi sensoriali. La cefalizzazione è intrinsecamente connessa con un cambiamento di simmetria. Ha accompagnato il passaggio alla simmetria bilaterale realizzata in flatworms, con ocelli e pinna posti nella regione capa. Oltre a una concentrazione di organi di senso, tutti gli animali provenienti da annelidi, inoltre, posizionano la bocca nella regione del capo. Questo processo è anche legato allo sviluppo di un cervello anteriore nei cordadi del notochord. Una notevole eccezione all'andamento della cefalizzazione durante l'avanzamento evolutivo è il phylum Echinodermata, che, pur avendo un antenato bilaterale, come dimostrato dalla loro embriologia, si sviluppa in un animale pentaradio senza gangli neurali concentrati o regione sensoriale. Tuttavia, alcuni echinodermi hanno sviluppato secondariamente la simmetria bilaterale.
