Cartismo
Il Chartismo era un movimento di classe operaia per la riforma politica in Gran Bretagna che esisteva dal 1838 al 1850 e che prese il nome dalla Carta Popolare del 1838. Fu un movimento di protesta nazionale, con forti posizioni di sostegno nel nord dell'Inghilterra, nell'est Midlands, le Potteries, il Paese Nero e il Galles del sud. Il sostegno al movimento era al massimo nel 1839, nel 1842 e nel 1848, quando le dimissioni firmate da milioni di lavoratori sono state presentate alla Camera dei Comuni. La strategia impiegata era quella di utilizzare la scala di sostegno di queste petizioni e degli incontri di massa accompagnati dimostrati per esercitare pressioni sui politici per concedere il suffragio della virilità. Il Chartismo si basava perciò sui metodi costituzionali per assicurare i suoi obiettivi, anche se alcuni erano coinvolti in attività insurrezionali, in particolare nel Galles del sud e nello Yorkshire. La Carta popolare ha chiesto sei riforme per rendere il sistema politico più democratico: ▪ votare per ogni uomo di vent'anni, di mente sana e non essere punito per un crimine. ▪ Il voto segreto - Per proteggere l'elettore nell'esercizio del suo voto.
