Colloide
Un colloide è una sostanza dispersa microscopicamente in un'altra sostanza. Le particelle di fase dispersa hanno un diametro compreso tra circa 1 e 1000 nanometri. Tali particelle sono normalmente facilmente visibili in un microscopio ottico, anche se in corrispondenza del campo di dimensioni più piccole, può essere richiesto un microscopio elettronico o un microscopio elettronico. Miscele omogenee con una fase dispersa in questa gamma di dimensioni possono essere chiamate aerosol colloidali, emulsioni colloidali, schiume colloidali, dispersioni colloidali o idrosoli. Le particelle disperse o le goccioline sono influenzate in gran parte dalla chimica superficiale presente nel colloide. Alcuni colloidi sono traslucidi a causa dell'effetto Tyndall, che è la dispersione della luce da particelle nel colloide. Altri colloidi possono essere opachi o avere un leggero colore. Le sospensioni colloidali sono oggetto di interfaccia e scienza colloidale. Questo campo di studio è stato introdotto nel 1861 da scienziato scozzese Thomas Graham.
