Un monomero è una molecola che può legarsi chimicamente ad altre molecole per formare un polimero. Il termine "proteina monomerica" può anche essere usato per descrivere una delle proteine che costituiscono un complesso multiproteina. Il monomero naturale più comune è il glucosio, che è legato da legami glicosidici in polimeri come la cellulosa e l'amido e supera il 77% della massa di tutte le sostanze vegetali. Più spesso il termine monomero si riferisce alle molecole organiche che formano polimeri sintetici, come ad esempio vinil cloruro, che viene utilizzato per produrre il polimero polivinilcloruro. Il processo con cui i monomeri si combinano alla fine per formare un polimero viene chiamato polimerizzazione .
