Le conifere, la divisione Pinophyta, conosciuta anche come divisione Coniferophyta o Coniferae, sono una delle 12 tasse di divisione esistenti all'interno del Plantae del Regno e di 10 all'interno delle piante esistenti. Pinophytes sono gymnosperms, cono-bearing piante di sementi con tessuto vascolare. Tutte le conifere esistenti sono piante legnose, la maggior parte degli alberi con pochi sono arbusti. Esempi tipici di conifere includono cedri, Douglas, cipressi, funghi, ginepro, kauri, larici, pini, hemlocks, redwood, spruces e yews. Sono le piante dominanti su grandi aree di terra, in particolare le foreste boreali dell'emisfero settentrionale, ma anche in climi freschi simili nelle montagne più a sud. Conifere boreali hanno molti adattamenti invernali. La forma stretto conica delle conifere nordiche e le loro arti inferiori, li aiuta a spargere la neve. Molti di loro modificano stagionalmente la loro biochimica per renderli più resistenti al congelamento, chiamati "indurimento".
