L'Eocene / iːəsiːn / epoca, durata da 56 a 33,9 milioni di anni fa, è una divisione importante del tempo geologico e della seconda epoca del Periodo Paleogeno nell'Era Cenozoica. L'Eocene copre il tempo dalla fine dell'epoca paleocenica fino all'inizio dell'epoca oligocenica. L'inizio dell'Eocene è segnato da un breve periodo in cui la concentrazione dell'isotopo di carbonio 13C nell'atmosfera è stata eccezionalmente bassa rispetto all'isotopo 12C più comune. La fine è fissata ad un grande evento di estinzione chiamato Grande Coupure o l'evento di estinzione Eocene-Oligocene, che può essere correlato all'impatto di uno o più grandi bolidi in Siberia e in quello che è ora Chesapeake Bay. Come con altri periodi geologici, gli strati che definiscono l'inizio e la fine dell'epoca sono ben identificati, anche se le loro date esatte sono leggermente incerte. Il nome Eocene deriva dal greco ἠώς e καινός e si riferisce all'alba della fauna moderna che è apparsa nell'epoca.
