Extraposition
L'estensione è un meccanismo di sintassi che modifica l'ordine di parola in modo tale che un componente relativamente "pesante" appartiene alla destra della sua posizione canonica. L'estensione di un componente comporta una discontinuità e, a questo proposito, è diverso dal passaggio, che non genera una discontinuità. Il componente estratto è separato dal suo governatore da una o più parole che dominano il suo governatore. Due tipi di estensione sono riconosciuti nella sintassi teorica: casi standard in cui l'estrapolazione è facoltativa e l'estrapolazione in cui l'estraposizione è obbligatoria. L'estensione è motivata in parte da un desiderio di ridurre l'incorporazione del centro aumentando l'allineamento destro e quindi facilitando l'elaborazione, mentre le strutture centrate sono più difficili da elaborare. L'estensione si verifica frequentemente in inglese e nelle lingue correlate.
