Nella meccanica applicata, la piegatura caratterizza il comportamento di un elemento strutturale snello sottoposto ad un carico esterno applicato perpendicolarmente ad un asse longitudinale dell'elemento. Si ritiene che l'elemento strutturale sia tale che almeno una delle sue dimensioni sia una piccola frazione, tipicamente 1/10 o meno, degli altri due. Quando la lunghezza è notevolmente più lunga della larghezza e dello spessore, l'elemento viene chiamato fascio. Ad esempio, un'asta di armadio che si abbassa sotto il peso degli abiti su appendiabiti è un esempio di un fascio che sperimenta la curvatura. D'altra parte, una shell è una struttura di qualsiasi forma geometrica in cui la lunghezza e la larghezza sono dello stesso ordine di grandezza ma lo spessore della struttura è notevolmente più piccolo. Un tubo di grande diametro, ma sottile e corto, appoggiato alle sue estremità e caricato lateralmente è un esempio di una conchiglia che sperimenta la curvatura. In assenza di un qualificatore, il termine piegamento è ambiguo perché la piegatura può verificarsi localmente in tutti gli oggetti.
