La frutticoltura è la parte generatrice dell'impianto. Talvolta si applica più ampiamente alle parti generative di ginnospermi, felci, cunei e lycophytes, anche se non producono né frutta né fiore. Dalle opere di Andrea Caesalpino i caratteri della fruttificazione sono stati ampiamente utilizzati come base per la classificazione scientifica delle piante. Carolus Linnaeus ha sollevato la descrizione delle parti della fruttificazione a un livello di precisione senza precedenti. Ha insistito sul fatto che i generi ei gruppi più alti di piante devono essere caratterizzati in termini di fruttuazione da solo senza utilizzare parti vegetative. A quel tempo si credeva che tutte le piante abbiano fiori e frutti. Fu solo fino al diciannovesimo secolo che l'importante differenza tra sementi e spore fu riconosciuta e l'uso dei termini fiore e frutta era limitato alle piante fiorite. I tassonomisti di pianta successivamente utilizzavano un approccio più equilibrato e riapparivano l'uso delle parti vegetative dell'impianto come base per i personaggi a diversi livelli di gerarchia tassonomica.
