La grande apertura era un uccello volante della famiglia alcidica, estinta a metà del XIX secolo. Era l'unica specie moderna del genere Pinguinus, un gruppo di uccelli che precedentemente includevano un'altra specie di gigante gigante senza volo dalla regione dell'Oceano Atlantico. Durante l'inverno, l'auk ha perso queste patch, sviluppando invece una fascia bianca che si estende tra gli occhi. Le ali erano lunghe solo 15 centimetri, rendendo l'uccello senza fili.
