Geranio
Il geranio è un genere di 422 specie di piante fiorite annuali, biennali e perenni che sono comunemente noti come le gru. Si trovano in tutte le regioni temperate del mondo e le montagne dei tropici, ma soprattutto nella parte orientale della regione mediterranea. Le foglie lunghe e palmate sono largamente circolari. I fiori hanno cinque petali e sono colorati bianchi, rosa, viola o blu, spesso con venature distintive. I gerani cresceranno in qualsiasi suolo finché non è inzuppato. La propagazione avviene per tagliare semiripe in estate, per semina o divisione in autunno o in primavera. Il nome del genere è derivato dal greco γέρανος o γερανός 'gru'. Il nome inglese "cranebill" deriva dalla comparsa della capsula di frutta di alcune delle specie. Le specie del genere Geranium hanno un meccanismo distintivo per la dispersione di sementi. Questo è costituito da una colonna a forma di becco che si apre quando si matura e lancia i semi a distanza. La capsula di frutta è costituita da cinque cellule, ciascuna contenente un seme, unita ad una colonna prodotta dal centro del vecchio fiore.
