Un glen è una valle, tipicamente una lunga, profonda e spesso glaciale a forma di U, o una con un corso d'acqua che attraversa. Whittow lo definisce come un "termine scozzese per una valle profonda nelle Highlands", che è "più stretto di uno strath". La parola è Goidelic: gleann in gaelico scozzese e irlandese, glion in Manx. In Manx, anche il glan è trovato in senso glen. È congiunta con il gln gallese. La parola si trova talvolta nei luoghi dove il suo significato era opaco a una nuova comunità linguistica, esempio forse Glendale che è una combinazione di "dale" e "glen" gaelico. Come nome di un fiume, si pensa che derivi dalla parola irlandese glan che significa pulito, o la parola gallese gleindid significa purezza. Un esempio è il Glens of Antrim in Irlanda del Nord, dove nove glene si irradiano dall'altopiano di Antrim al mare lungo la costa tra Ballycastle e Larne.
