Il gnosticismo descrive una raccolta di antiche religioni che hanno insegnato che la gente dovrebbe sconfiggere il mondo materiale creato dal demiurgo e abbracciare il mondo spirituale. Le idee gnostiche hanno influenzato molte religioni antiche che insegnano che la gnosi può essere raggiunta praticando la filantropia al punto di povertà personale, astinenza sessuale e cercando diligentemente la saggezza aiutando gli altri. Tuttavia, le pratiche variarono tra coloro che erano gnostici. Nel gnosticismo il mondo del demiurgo è rappresentato dal mondo inferiore, associato alla materia, alla carne, al tempo e più particolarmente a un mondo imperfetto e effimero. Il mondo di Dio è rappresentato dal mondo superiore e è associato all'anima e alla perfezione. Il mondo di Dio è eterno e non fa parte del fisico. È impalpabile, e il tempo non esiste. Per arrivare a Dio, il gnostico deve raggiungere la conoscenza, che mescola filosofia, metafisica, curiosità, cultura, conoscenza e segreti della storia e dell'universo. Il gnosticismo è principalmente definito in un contesto cristiano.
