Nella matematica, il gradiente è una generalizzazione del solito concetto di derivato alle funzioni di più variabili. Se f è una funzione differenziata, scalare-valutata di diverse variabili, il suo gradiente è il vettore i cui componenti sono i n derivati parziali di f. È quindi una funzione valutata dal vettore. Similmente al solito derivato, il gradiente rappresenta il pendio della tangente del grafico della funzione. Più precisamente, i gradienti in direzione della maggiore velocità di incremento della funzione e della sua grandezza sono la pendenza del grafico in quella direzione. I componenti del gradiente nelle coordinate sono i coefficienti delle variabili nell'equazione dello spazio tangente al grafico. Questa proprietà caratterizzante del gradiente consente di definire indipendentemente da una scelta del sistema di coordinate come campo vettoriale i cui componenti in un sistema di coordinate si trasformeranno quando passeranno da un sistema di coordinate all'altro. Il Jacobian è la generalizzazione del gradiente per funzioni vettoriali di diverse variabili e mappe differenziate tra spazi euclidei o, più in generale, manifolds.
