Groupthink è un fenomeno psicologico che si verifica all'interno di un gruppo di persone, in cui il desiderio di armonia o di conformità nel gruppo produce un risultato decisionale irrazionale o disfunzionale. I membri del gruppo cercano di ridurre al minimo i conflitti e di raggiungere una decisione di consenso senza una valutazione critica di punti di vista alternativi, attenuando attivamente punti di vista dissenzienti e isolandosi da influenze esterne. La fedeltà al gruppo richiede agli individui di evitare sollevamenti di questioni controverse o di soluzioni alternative, e c'è la perdita della creatività individuale, dell'unicità e del pensiero indipendente. La dinamica del gruppo disfunzionale del "ingroup" produce un'illusione di invulnerabilità. Così l'"ingroup" supera in modo significativo le proprie capacità nel processo decisionale e sottrae in modo significativo le capacità dei suoi avversari. Inoltre il gruppo di pensiero può produrre azioni disumanizzanti contro il "outgroup". I fattori precedenti come la coesione del gruppo, la struttura del gruppo difettosa e il contesto situazionale svolgono la probabilità di influenzare o meno il gruppo di discussione sul processo decisionale.
