L'isteresi è la dipendenza dell'output di un sistema non solo sul suo input corrente, ma anche sulla sua storia degli input passati. La dipendenza sorge perché la storia influenza il valore di uno stato interno. Per prevedere le sue uscite future, deve essere conosciuto sia il suo stato interno che la sua storia. Se un dato dato aumenta e diminuisce alternativamente, un carattere tipico di isteresi è che l'uscita forma un ciclo come in figura. Tali cicli possono verificarsi puramente a causa di un ritardo dinamico tra ingresso e uscita. Questo effetto scompare quando l'input cambia più lentamente. L'isteresi si verifica nei materiali ferromagnetici e nei materiali ferroelettrici, nonché nella deformazione di alcuni materiali in risposta ad una forza variabile. Nei sistemi naturali l'isteresi è spesso associata a un cambiamento termodinamico irreversibile. Molti sistemi artificiali sono progettati per avere isteresi: ad esempio, nei termostati e nei trigger di Schmitt, l'isteresi viene utilizzata per evitare un rapido passaggio indesiderato.
