Le informazioni sono quelle che informano, cioè da cui i dati possono essere derivati. Le informazioni vengono trasmesse sia come contenuto di un messaggio, sia attraverso l'osservazione diretta o indiretta di qualche cosa. Quello che è percepito può essere interpretato come un messaggio a suo diritto e in questo senso, le informazioni sono sempre trasmesse come contenuto di un messaggio. L'incertezza di un evento è misurata dalla sua probabilità di avvenimento ed è inversamente proporzionale a quella. Il più incerto evento, più informazioni sono necessarie per risolvere l'incertezza di tale evento. Il bit è un'unità tipica di informazioni, ma possono essere utilizzate altre unità come il nat. Esempio: informazioni in un flusso "fair": log2 = 1 bit, e in due flip di moneta equa è log2 = 2 bit. Il concetto che l'informazione è il messaggio ha diversi significati in diversi contesti.
