Inerenza

L'inerenza si riferisce all'idea di Empedocle che le qualità della materia proviene dalle proporzioni relative di ciascuno dei quattro elementi che entrano in una cosa. L'idea fu ulteriormente sviluppata da Platone e Aristotele. Quel Platone ha accettato l'affermazione di Empedocles si può vedere nel Timio. Tuttavia, Platone lo applicò anche per coprire la presenza della forma in materia. La forma è un principio attivo. La materia, d'altro canto, è passiva, essendo una semplice possibilità che le forme vengano a vivere. Aristotele ha chiaramente accettato l'affermazione di Empedocle, ma ha rifiutato l'idea di Platone delle forme. Secondo Aristotele, gli incidenti di una sostanza sono esseri incorporei che sono presenti in essa. "Essendo" presente in un soggetto "non intendo il presente perché le parti sono presenti in un intero, ma essendo incapaci di esistere a parte il detto soggetto". Un termine strettamente correlato è la partecipazione. Se un attributo è in un soggetto, si dice che il soggetto partecipa all'attributo. Ad esempio, se l'attributo di Atene è ereditato in Socrate, Socrates si dice che partecipa all'attributo, a Atene ....
