Nella programmazione dei sistemi, un interrupt è un segnale al processore emesso da hardware o software che indica un evento che richiede un'attenzione immediata. Un interrupt avvisa il processore in una condizione ad alta priorità che richiede l'interruzione del codice corrente che il processore esegue. Il processore risponde sospendendo le sue attività attuali, salvando il suo stato e eseguendo un piccolo programma chiamato gestore di interrupt per affrontare l'evento. Questa interruzione è temporanea e dopo la fine del gestore dell'interrupt, il processore riprende l'esecuzione del thread precedente. Esistono due tipi di interrupt: un interrupt hardware è un segnale di allarme elettronico inviato al processore da un dispositivo esterno, una parte del computer stesso, ad esempio un controller disco o una periferica esterna. Ad esempio, premendo un tasto sulla tastiera o muovendo il mouse, vengono avviati interrupt hardware che causano il processore a leggere la posizione del tasto o del mouse. A differenza del tipo di software, gli interrupt hardware sono asincroni e possono verificarsi nel mezzo dell'esecuzione dell'istruzione, richiedendo ulteriori cure nella programmazione.
