Una isoforma della proteina è una delle diverse forme della stessa proteina. Diverse forme di una proteina possono essere prodotte da duplicati genici molto strettamente connessi, poiché 'la stessa proteina' o 'una proteina' non ha senso per i paraloghi altamente divergenti che sono sorti da un unico gene ancestrale che duplicato miliardi di anni fa e successivamente divergono notevolmente Sequenza, struttura e funzionalità - o può derivare dallo stesso gene mediante splicing alternativo. Nella letteratura più antica si può anche incontrare l'uso del termine isoforma per descrivere gli alleli dello stesso gene, ma attualmente i termini si riferiscono principalmente a proteine parallele e alternativamente splicate, non alleli.
