Le lapiti sono una leggendaria gente di mitologia greca, la cui casa era in Tessaglia, nella valle del Peneo e sulla montagna Pelion. Erano una tribù Eoliana. Come i Myrmidons e le altre tribù tedesche, i Lapith erano pre-grecoli nelle loro origini. Le genealogie li rendono una persona affrancata con i Centauri: in una versione Lapithes e Centaurus si dicevano di essere figli gemelli del dio Apollo e della ninfa Stilbe, figlia del dio del fiume Peneo. Lapithes era un guerriero valoroso, ma il Centauro era un essere deformato che poi si era coniato con le gorghe da cui proveniva la corsa di Centauri di mezzo e mezzo cavallo. Lapithes era l'antenato omonimo del popolo Lapith ei suoi discendenti erano i guerrieri ei re di Lapith, come Ixion, Pirithous, Caeno e Coronus, ei veggenti Idmon e Mopsus. The Lapiths are a legendary people of Greek mythology, whose home was in Thessaly, in the valley of the Peneus and on the mountain Pelion. They were an Aeolian tribe. Like the Myrmidons and other Thessalian tribes, the Lapiths were pre-Hellenic in their origins. The genealogies make them a kindred people with the Centaurs: in one version, Lapithes and Centaurus were said to be twin sons of the god Apollo and the nymph Stilbe, daughter of the river god Peneus. Lapithes was a valiant warrior, but Centaurus was a deformed being who later mated with mares from whom the race of half-man, half-horse Centaurs then came. Lapithes was the eponymous ancestor of the Lapith people, and his descendants include Lapith warriors and kings, such as Ixion, Pirithous, Caeneus, and Coronus, and the seers Idmon and Mopsus. In the Iliad the Lapiths send forty manned ships to join the Greek fleet in the Trojan War, commanded by Polypoetes and Leonteus.
