Il porro è una verdura che appartiene, insieme alla cipolla e all'aglio, al genere Allium, attualmente collocato in famiglia Amaryllidaceae, sottofamiglia Allioideae. Storicamente molti nomi scientifici sono stati usati per i porri, che vengono ora trattati come cultivar di Allium ampeloprasum. Due verdure correlate, l'aglio elefante e Kurrat, sono anche cultivar di A. ampeloprasum, anche se diversi nei loro usi come alimenti. La parte commestibile della pianta di porro è un fascio di guaina foglia che a volte è erroneamente chiamato stelo o gambo.
