Limerenza è uno stato mentale involontario che deriva da una attrazione romantica ad un'altra persona combinata con una necessità travolgente e ossessiva per avere i propri sentimenti reciprocati. Lo psicologo Dorothy Tennov ha coniato il termine "limerenza" nel suo libro Amore e Limerenza del 1979: L'esperienza dell'essere in amore per descrivere il concetto che era cresciuto dal suo lavoro alla metà degli anni '60, quando ha intervistato oltre 500 persone sul tema d'amore. Più di recente, è stata definita la limerenza in relazione al disturbo ossessivo compulsivo come "uno stato interpersonale involontario che coinvolge pensieri, sentimenti e comportamenti intrusivi, ossessivi e compulsivi che dipendono dalla reciproca commozione emotiva percepita dall'oggetto di interesse". La limeranza è stata definita anche in termini di effetti potenzialmente ispiratori e del rapporto con la teoria degli attaccamenti, che non è esclusivamente sessuale, come "uno stato involontario potenzialmente ispiratore di adorazione e attaccamento ad un oggetto limerente che coinvolge pensieri, sensazioni e comportamenti intrusivi e ossessivi Da euforia alla disperazione, contingente alla reciproca commozione emotiva percepita ".
