Il melanismo è uno sviluppo del melanina di colore pigro colorato nella pelle o nelle sue appendici ed è l'opposto dell' albinismo. Storicamente, era anche il termine medico per l'ittero nero. Il termine melanismo è dedotto dal greco: μελανός, che significa "pigmento nero". Il pseudo-melanismo, detto anche abundismo, è un'altra variante di pigmentazione, caratterizzata da macchie scure o da strisce allargate, che coprono gran parte del corpo dell'animale, rendendola melanica. Una deficienza in assenza totale di pigmenti melanina è chiamata amelanismo. La deposizione morbosa della materia nera, spesso di un carattere maligno che causa tumori pigmentati, è chiamata melanosi.
