Melatonina / / ˌmɛlətoʊnɪn /, nota anche chimicamente come N-acetil-5-metossitampamma, è un ormone presente negli animali, nelle piante e nei microbi. Negli animali i livelli circolanti di melatonina variano in un ciclo quotidiano, permettendo così il trascinamento dei ritmi circadiani di diverse funzioni biologiche. Molti effetti biologici della melatonina sono prodotti attraverso l'attivazione di recettori di melatonina, mentre altri sono dovuti al suo ruolo di antiossidante pervasivo e potente, con un ruolo particolare nella protezione del DNA nucleare e mitocondriale. Gli effetti completi della supplementazione esogena a lungo termine negli esseri umani non sono ancora stati accertati. La melatonina è classificata dalla US Food and Drug Administration come integratore alimentare e non è regolamentata come farmaco farmaceutico. Un prodotto melatoninico a rilascio temporaneo per le persone di età superiore ai 55 anni è stato approvato dall'Agenzia europea per i medicinali nel 2007, anche se ha mostrato solo piccoli effetti, e in Australia nel 2009.
