Momento di inerzia è la proprietà di massa di un corpo rigido che determina la coppia necessaria per un'accelerazione angolare desiderata attorno ad un asse di rotazione. Il momento d'inerzia dipende dalla forma del corpo e può essere diverso attorno a diversi assi di rotazione. Un momento più grande di inerzia intorno ad un determinato asse richiede più coppia per aumentare la rotazione, o per fermare la rotazione, di un corpo attorno a quel asse. Il momento dell'inerzia dipende dalla quantità e dalla distribuzione della sua massa e può essere trovata attraverso la somma dei momenti di inerzia delle masse che costituiscono l'intero oggetto, alle stesse condizioni. Ad esempio, se ma + mb = mc, allora Ia + Ib = Ic. Nella meccanica classica, il momento di inerzia può anche essere definito momento di inerzia, inerzia rotazionale, momento polare di inerzia o massa angolare. Per il movimento planare di un corpo, le traiettorie di tutti i suoi punti si trovano in piani paralleli e la rotazione si verifica solo su un asse perpendicolare a questo piano. In questo caso, il corpo ha un solo momento di inerzia, misurato intorno a questo asse.
