Il codice Morse è un metodo per trasmettere informazioni di testo come una serie di toni, luci o clic su on-off che possono essere direttamente compresi da un ascoltatore esperto o da un osservatore senza apparecchiature speciali. Il codice internazionale Morse codifica l'alfabeto latino ISO, alcune lettere latine extra, i numeri arabi e una piccola serie di segnali di punteggiatura e procedurali come sequenze standardizzate di segnali brevi e lunghi chiamati "punti" e "trattini" o "diti" e "dahs". Poiché molte lingue naturali non inglesi utilizzano più delle 26 lettere romane, esistono delle estensioni all'alfabeto Morse per quelle lingue. Ogni personaggio è rappresentato da una sequenza unica di punti e trattini. La durata di un trattino è tre volte la durata di un punto. Ogni punto o trattino viene seguito da un breve silenzio, pari alla durata del punteggio. Le lettere di una parola sono separate da uno spazio pari a tre punti e le parole sono separate da uno spazio pari a sette punti. La durata del punto è l'unità di base della misurazione del tempo nella trasmissione del codice. Per l'efficienza, la lunghezza di ogni carattere di Morse è approssimativamente inversamente proporzionale alla sua frequenza di occorrenza in inglese.
