CHE SIGNIFICA MUDFLATS IN INGLESE

I fanghi oi fanghi, noti anche come appartamenti a maree, sono zone umide costiere che si formano quando il fango è depositato da maree o fiumi. Si trovano in zone protette come baie, baia, lagune e estuari. I fanghi possono essere osservati geologicamente come strati esposti di fango di baia, derivanti dalla deposizione di estratti di estuario, argille e detriti di animali marini. La maggior parte del sedimento all'interno di un mudflat è all'interno della zona intertidal, e quindi l'appartamento è sommerso e esposto circa due volte al giorno. In passato gli appartamenti a marea erano considerati aree malsane, economicamente poco importanti e spesso vennero dragate e sviluppate in terreni agricoli. Molte zone particolarmente poco profonde, come il Mare di Wadden, sono ormai famose tra coloro che praticano lo sport delle escursioni in mudflat. Sulla costa della Germania del Mar Baltico in luoghi, i fanghi non sono esposti da un'azione a marea, ma da un vento che guida l'acqua lontano dalle superfici in mare. Questi fanghi affetti da vento sono chiamati windwatts in tedesco.
