La pesca è un albero deciduo, nativo della Cina nord-occidentale, nella regione tra il bacino di Tarim e le pendici nord delle montagne Kunlun Shan, dove è stato prima domestico e coltivato. Porta un frutto commestibile, anche chiamato pesca. Il nome della specie persica si riferisce alla sua diffusa coltivazione in Persia, da dove è stato trapiantato in Europa. Appartiene al genere Prunus che include la ciliegia e la prugna, nella famiglia Rosaceae. La pesca è classificata con la mandorla nel subgenero Amygdalus, distinto dall'altro sottogruppo dal guscio di seme ondulato. Le pesche e le nettarine sono le stesse specie, anche se sono considerate commercialmente come frutti diversi. A differenza della pesca i cui frutti presentano la caratteristica macchia sulla pelle, le nettarine sono caratterizzate dall'assenza di tricomi della frutta; Gli studi genetici suggeriscono che le nettarine sono prodotte a causa di un allele recessivo, mentre le pesche sono prodotte da un allele dominante per la pelle fuzzy. La Cina è il più grande produttore mondiale di pesche.
