Un neologismo è il nome di un termine, di una parola o di una frase recentemente coniati che può essere nel processo di entrare in uso comune ma che non è ancora stato accettato nel linguaggio mainstream. I neologismi sono spesso direttamente attribuibili ad una persona specifica, alla pubblicazione, al periodo o all'evento. Neolexia è sinonimo di esso. Il termine neologismo viene prima attestato in inglese nel 1772, preso in prestito da néologisme francese. Un neologismo può anche essere un nuovo uso di una parola esistente, talvolta chiamata estensione semantica. Questo è distinto da idiolect di una persona, da un modello unico di vocabolario, grammatica e pronuncia.
