Neuroblastoma è il più comune cancro solido extracranico nell'infanzia e il cancro più comune nell'infanzia, con un'incidenza di circa seicentocinquanta casi all'anno negli Stati Uniti e un centinaio di casi all'anno nel Regno Unito. Quasi la metà dei casi di neuroblastoma si verifica nei bambini di età inferiore ai due anni. È un tumore neuroendocrino, che nasce da qualsiasi elemento della cresta neurale del sistema nervoso simpatico. Essa si presenta più frequentemente in una delle ghiandole surrenali, ma può anche svilupparsi nei tessuti nervosi del collo, del petto, dell'addome o del bacino. Il neuroblastoma è uno dei pochi malignuni umani noti per dimostrare la regressione spontanea da uno stato indifferenziato ad un aspetto cellulare completamente benigno. Si tratta di una malattia che presenta un'eterogeneità estrema e si stratifica in tre categorie di rischio: basso, intermedio ed alto rischio. La malattia a basso rischio è più frequente nei neonati e buoni risultati sono comuni solo con l'osservazione o con l'intervento chirurgico, mentre la malattia ad alto rischio è difficile da trattare anche con le terapie multi-modali più intense disponibili.
