In medicina, un coma è uno stato di incoscienza che dura più di sei ore, in cui una persona: non può essere risvegliata; Non risponde normalmente a stimoli dolorosi, leggeri o suoni; Manca un normale ciclo di sonno-sveglia; E, non avviare azioni volontarie. Una persona in stato di coma è descritta come comata. Una persona coma mostra una completa assenza di veglia e non è in grado di sentire, parlare, ascoltare o muoversi coscientemente. Per un paziente a mantenere la coscienza, devono funzionare due importanti componenti neurologiche. La prima è la corteccia cerebrale, la materia grigia che copre lo strato esterno del cervello. L'altro è una struttura situata nel sistema cerebrale, chiamata sistema di attivazione reticolare. La ferita di uno o di entrambi questi componenti è sufficiente per causare un paziente a un coma. La corteccia cerebrale è un gruppo di "materia grigia" stretto e denso composto dal nucleo dei neuroni i cui assoni formano quindi la "materia bianca" ed è responsabile della percezione, del relè dell'ingresso sensoriale attraverso il percorso talamico e molti Altre funzioni neurologiche, compreso il pensiero complesso.

In medicine, a coma is a state of unconsciousness lasting more than six hours, in which a person: cannot be awakened; fails to respond normally to painful stimuli, light, or sound; lacks a normal sleep-wake cycle; and, does not initiate voluntary actions. A person in a state of coma is described as being comatose. A comatose person exhibits a complete absence of wakefulness and is unable to consciously feel, speak, hear, or move. For a patient to maintain consciousness, two important neurological components must function. The first is the cerebral cortex—the gray matter that covers the outer layer of the brain. The other is a structure located in the brainstem, called reticular activating system. Injury to either or both of these components is sufficient to cause a patient to experience a coma. The cerebral cortex is a group of tight, dense, "gray matter" composed of the nucleus of the neurons whose axons then form the "white matter", and is responsible for perception, relay of the sensory input via the thalamic pathway, and many other neurological functions, including complex thinking.
