L'arte astratta usa un linguaggio visivo di forma, colore e linea per creare una composizione che possa esistere con un grado di indipendenza dai riferimenti visivi nel mondo. L'arte occidentale era stata, dal Rinascimento fino alla metà del XIX secolo, sostenuta dalla logica della prospettiva e dal tentativo di riprodurre un'illusione di realtà visibile. Le fonti da cui i singoli artisti disegnavano i loro argomenti teorici erano diversi e riflettevano le preoccupazioni sociali e intellettuali in tutti i settori della cultura occidentale in quel momento. L'arte astratta, l'arte nonfigurativa, l'arte non-obiettiva e l'arte non rappresentativa sono termini legati in modo sfavorevole. Sono simili, ma forse non hanno un significato identico. L'astrazione indica una partenza dalla realtà nella rappresentazione di immagini nell'arte. Questa partenza dalla rappresentazione accurata può essere leggera, parziale o completa.
