Il rasoio di Occam è un principio di parsimonia, di economia o di succinctness usato per risolvere i problemi ideato da William of Ockham. Essa afferma che tra le ipotesi concorrenti dovrebbe essere selezionata quella con i minimi assunti. Altre soluzioni più complicate, in definitiva, possono rivelarsi corrette, ma, in assenza di certezza, meno le ipotesi fatte, meglio è. L'applicazione del principio sposta spesso l'onere della prova in una discussione. Il rasoio afferma che si dovrebbe procedere a teorie più semplici finché la semplicità non può essere scambiata per una maggiore potenza esplicativa. La teoria più semplice disponibile non deve essere più precisa. I filosofi sottolineano inoltre che il significato esatto del più semplice può essere nuovamente modificato. La teoria di Solomonoff per l'inferenza induttiva è un razzo matematico formalizzato di Occam: le teorie più corte possono avere più peso nel calcolo della probabilità della prossima osservazione, utilizzando tutte le teorie calcolabili che descrivono perfettamente le osservazioni precedenti. Nella scienza, il rasoio di Occam è usato come un euristico per guidare gli scienziati nello sviluppo di modelli teorici anziché come arbitro tra i modelli pubblicati.
