Orcein, anche archil, orchil, lacmus e C.I. Natural Red 28, sono nomi per coloranti estratti da diverse specie di licheni, comunemente noti come "erbaccia orchella", trovati in varie parti del mondo. Una fonte importante è il lichene arcificato, Roccella tinctoria. L'orcinolo viene estratto da tali licheni. Viene poi convertito in orcein da ammoniaca e aria. Nei metodi tradizionali di colorazione, l'urina è stata utilizzata come fonte di ammoniaca. Se la conversione viene effettuata in presenza di carbonato di potassio, idrossido di calcio e solfato di calcio, il risultato è il litmus, una molecola più complessa. La fabbricazione è stata descritta da Cocq nel 1812 e nel Regno Unito nel 1874. Roberts nota l'orchiglia come principale esportazione delle isole del Capo Verde, superiore allo stesso tipo di muschio trovata in Italia o nelle Canarie, che nel 1832 cedeva un reddito annuale Di $ 200.000: pp.14,15 L'archil commerciale è una polvere o una pasta. È rosso in pH acido e blu in pH alcalino. Orcein è approvato come colorante alimentare, con E numero E121 prima del 1977 e dopo E182. Il suo numero CAS è 1400-62-0. La sua formula chimica è C28H24N2O7. Forma cristalli marroni scuri.
