Una parodia, in uso, è un lavoro imitativo creato per imitare, commentare e trivializzare un lavoro originale, il suo soggetto, l'autore, lo stile o un altro bersaglio, per mezzo di imitazione satirica o ironica. Come dice la teorica letteraria Linda Hutcheon, "la parodia ... è imitazione, non sempre a scapito del testo parodizzato". Un altro critico, Simon Dentith, definisce la parodia come "qualsiasi pratica culturale che fornisce un'imitazione allusiva relativamente polemica di un'altra produzione o pratica culturale". La parodia può essere trovata nell'arte o nella cultura, tra cui la letteratura, la musica, l'animazione, il gioco e il film. Lo scrittore e critico John Gross osserva nel suo libro di Oxford di Parodie, che sembra che la parodia fiorisce sul territorio tra passiche e burlesque. Storicamente, quando una formula si stanca, come nel caso dei melodrammi moralistici negli anni '10, mantiene il valore solo come una parodia, come nel caso dei pantaloncini Buster Keaton che lo hanno ingannato.
