I cinque patriarchi del Pentagono si sono seduti a Roma, Costantinopoli, Alessandria, Antiochia e Gerusalemme. Lo scisma dell'Est-Occidente del 1054 suddivide il romanzo di lingua latino dai quattro patriarcati greco-parlanti, formando le diverse chiese cattoliche e ortodosse orientali. Il patriarca ortodosso orientale di Antiochia si trasferì a Damasco nel XIII secolo, durante il regno dei Mameluki egiziani, conquistatori della Siria. A Damasco una comunità cristiana era fiorita fin dai tempi apostolici.
