Percorso di fosfato di pentosa
Il percorso di pentosa fosfato è una via biochimica parallela alla glicolisi che genera NADPH e pentose. Mentre coinvolge l'ossidazione del glucosio, il suo ruolo primario è anabolizzante piuttosto che catabolico. Ci sono due fasi distinte nel percorso. La prima è la fase ossidativa in cui nasce NADPH e la seconda è la sintesi non ossidativa di zuccheri a 5 carbonio. Per la maggior parte degli organismi, il percorso di pentosa fosfato si svolge nel citosolo; Nelle piante, la maggior parte delle fasi si svolgono in plastide. Simile alla glicolisi, il percorso pentosa fosfato sembra avere un'origine evolutiva molto antica. Le reazioni di questo percorso sono l'enzima catalizzata nelle celle moderne. Essi si verificano anche non enzimaticamente in condizioni che replicano quelle dell'oceano archeano e sono poi catalizzate da ioni metallici, ferro Fe ferroso in particolare. Le origini del percorso potevano pertanto risalire al mondo prebiotico.
