Fosforescenza
La fosforescenza è un tipo specifico di fotoluminescenza legata alla fluorescenza. A differenza della fluorescenza, un materiale fosforescente non rileva immediatamente la radiazione che assorbe. Le scalini temporali più basse della riemissione sono associate a transizioni di stato di energia "proibite" nella meccanica quantistica. Poiché queste transizioni si verificano molto lentamente in certi materiali, la radiazione assorbita può essere emessa nuovamente ad un'intensità inferiore fino a diverse ore dopo l'eccitazione originale. Gli esempi più comuni di materiali fosforescenti sono i giochi di gioielleria, vernice e orologi in incandescenza che si illuminano per un certo periodo di tempo dopo essere stati caricati con una luce luminosa come in qualsiasi lettura normale o nella luce della stanza. Tipicamente l'incandescente poi lentamente si svanisce per pochi minuti in una stanza buia. Lo studio dei materiali fosforescenti ha portato alla scoperta della radioattività nel 1896. Ironia della sorte, il fosforo bianco non presenta effettivamente questa proprietà, bensì la chemiluminescenza.
