Nove famiglie di uccelli largamente arboree compongono l'ordine Piciformes, il più conosciuto di essi essendo il Picidae, che include i picchi e i parenti stretti. I Piciformes contengono circa 67 generi viventi con poco più di 400 specie, di cui Picidae rappresentano circa la metà. In generale, i Piciformes sono insettivori, anche se i barbetti ei toucani mangiano per lo più frutta e le guide di miele sono uniche tra gli uccelli in grado di digerire la cera d'api. Quasi tutti i piciformi hanno i piedini zigodattili come pappagallo, due dita avanti e due indietro, un accordo che ha evidenti vantaggi per gli uccelli che spendono gran parte del loro tempo sui tronchi d'albero. Un'eccezione è costituita da alcune specie di picchi a tre tazze. I jacamar da parte, Piciformes non hanno piume piuma in qualsiasi età, solo veri piume. Essi vanno dalle dimensioni del Rufous Piculet a 8 centimetri di lunghezza e pesano 7 grammi, al Toco Toucan, a 63 centimetri di lunghezza e di peso di 680 grammi. Tutti i nidi nelle cavità e hanno altricial giovani.
