Klebsiella pneumoniae
Klebsiella pneumoniae è un batterio anaerobico, a forma di barra, a base di batteri Gram-negativi, non-motile, incapsulato, a base di lattosio, facoltativo. Pur trovandosi nella normale flora della bocca, della pelle e dell'intestino, può causare alterazioni distruttive ai polmoni umani se aspira, in particolare agli alveoli che provocano lo spiedo sanguigno. Nell'ambiente clinico, è il membro più significativo del genere Klebsiella di Enterobacteriaceae. K oxytoca e K rhinoscleromatis sono stati dimostrati anche negli esemplari clinici umani. Negli ultimi anni, i klebsiellae sono diventati patogeni importanti nelle infezioni nosocomiali. Naturalmente si verifica nel terreno e circa il 30% dei ceppi può risolvere l'azoto in condizioni anaerobiche. Come diazotrofia libera di vita, il suo sistema di fissazione dell'azoto è stato molto studiato ed è di interesse agricolo poiché K. pneumoniae è stato dimostrato di aumentare i rendimenti delle colture in condizioni agricole. I membri del genere Klebsiella tipicamente esprimono due tipi di antigeni sulla loro superficie cellulare. Il primo O antigene è un componente del lipopolisaccaride, di cui 9 varietà esistono.
