La polyembryony è il fenomeno di due o più embrioni che si sviluppano da un singolo uovo fertilizzato. Polyembryony si verifica regolarmente in molte piante e animali. L'armadillo a nove bande, per esempio, genera solitamente quattro giovani identici. La polyembryony è meglio conosciuta tra gli insetti parasitoidi dell'Hymenoptera, le famiglie Encyrtidae, Dryinidae, Platygasteridae e Braconidae. Queste ultime larve pattugliano l'ospite e uccidono qualsiasi altro parassitoidi che trovano, ad eccezione dei loro fratelli, di solito sorelle.
